Richard Shelton's sensational performance in SINATRA: RAW at the Hollywood Fringe is a masterclass of a performance. With sell-out runs in London, New York, Edinburgh, and Adelaide, this show takes audiences behind the blue eyes of Frank Sinatra, revealing the man behind the music. Directed by Andrew Lynford, Shelton's portrayal of Sinatra is nothing short of remarkable, bringing the legendary figure to life with an authentic blend of swagger, charm, and a touch of melancholy. As the show delves into Sinatra's mind during his retirement, Shelton's talent shines, delivering a searingly painful yet celebratory account of the iconic singer's life. Shelton's embodiment of Sinatra is really captivating. Every minute mannerism, from the legendary figure's enigmatic charisma to his poignant moments of sadness, is portrayed with impeccable detail. Shelton's rich and powerful voice breathes life into Sinatra's classic songs, including impressive performances of "All or Nothing at All," "My Foolish Heart," "My Way," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "A Very Good Year." The audience is transported back the 197 to the Purple Room in Palm Springs as Sinatra takes center stage for a final, heartfelt performance. This show goes beyond the surface glamour and delves into the complexities of Sinatra's life. Shelton's performance exposes Sinatra's vulnerabilities, including his failed relationships, suicide attempts, and alleged mob ties. The show offers a poignant reflection on the artist's struggles with aging and the feeling of becoming redundant in a changing world. Shelton's portrayal is deeply moving, capturing both the pain and resilience of the iconic figure, leaving the audience with a profound understanding of Sinatra's journey. Throughout the show, Shelton skillfully interacts with the audience, adding moments of fun and connection. His charismatic stage presence and ability to engage with the crowd create an immersive experience, making the audience feel like they are part of Sinatra's inner circle. These interactions further enhance the show's authenticity and leave a lasting impression on those lucky enough to attend. My one complaint is that the show ran slightly over its advertised time period. While this wouldn't normally be a problem, the music was definitely worth it, and I could have stayed and listened to his songs all evening. Thankfully, I did not have another Fringe show to attend afterward, but the strict start times of other shows could potentially throw off your schedule. Richard Shelton delivers a tour de force performance that transports audiences into the depths of Frank Sinatra's soul. With his remarkable voice, masterful interpretation, and a script that beautifully captures the highs and lows of Sinatra's life, Shelton creates an unforgettable theatrical experience. Directed by Andrew Lynford, this show is a must-see for both Sinatra enthusiasts and those new to his music. Don't miss the opportunity to witness this incredible portrayal of an iconic figure. Highly recommended.
