Disclaimer and note from the Author: I am a member of Flat Tire Theatre Company, but as I was not involved in the production of this performance I thought I wanted to check it out and provide my thoughts.
ENJOY YOUR STAY: AN AIRBNB ANTHOLOGY is comprised of five new original short plays developed by Flat Tire’s company members. They range from laugh out loud comedic, to heartfelt and uplifting, to outright disturbing and bone-chilling. Although they are all tied together by one central location centered around an Airbnb, each of the shorts are entirely independent of each other and self-contained in their own original narrative.
I understand Anthology series can be tricky at times like watching multiple episodes of Black Mirror back to back due to their self-contained narrative. It can be slightly jarring to go from one piece to the next, especially when there is a radical shift in tone.
Furthermore, when you are only getting a small sampling, as they are shorts, you can be left wanting more of each performance or character. That being said, I understand the point of these types of productions is to serve more like a petri dish - a chance to explore, take chances, and try things out. In this aspect, it definitely succeeds in its goal.
To no one's surprise, the Flat Tire Theatre Company has assembled a cast as diverse as it is talented; they do a tremendous job of taking on multidisciplinary roles, often performing in many shorts throughout the evening. Carlos Chavez takes the lion’s share of the performance appearing in three out of the five shorts, his dynamic range is shown in multiple characters throughout the show. It proves once again why he is the actor to be on the look-out for in 2020. I would also like to to highlight long-time Flat Tire collaborator Jake Fiedler who often functions in a behind the scenes capacity, I had a chance to speak with him after the show and I learned this was her first time to the stage as a performer after an eight-year hiatus from acting, he certainly could have fooled me as he was another standout performer as Ty in one of my favorite shorts "Pinkish Rubbish."
Design-wise the set is absolutely brilliant, perhaps the most well-designed space I have ever seen in a Flat Tire production. They make use of every nook and cranny in Studio/Stage; it feels warm and cozy and lived in, it really feels like a living room that is begging to be used.
Overall, I recommend checking this one out. Like an exceptional buffet Enjoy Your Stay provides a delicious sampling of tastes to satiate a variety of appetites and interest. There is a little something for everyone, don't sleep on this production as reservations for this one will be closing soon.
