This show is five quick pieces examining the middle age white male struggle to understand his role during the tumultuous times of today.
Nothing is off limits during this succinct and faced paced fifty-minute show. Straight White Men Trying To Woke discusses important issues from navigating today's current geopolitical climate, casual racism, religious fanaticism, finance lessons for millennial's and gender identity
Chris Valenti smart writing riffs on all manner of stereotypes, putting its audiences in purposefully "unsafe spaces" throughout the show, where significant issues of gender and race and politics are examined with a sense of merciless mischief.
The whole of the play is nuanced, questioning, and thought-provoking. That's not to say it's comfortable — Chris sense of playfulness and his expert control of pressure is still at play. Those purchasing tickets hoping for a joyous evisceration of straight white male privilege may be disappointed.
At its core, this show is a fast-paced fluid comedy that forces us to take a hard look in the mirror and examine our shortcomings, and it makes us ask ourselves not when, but how can we be better.
Overall I recommend this show.
